Curtis Woodman: A Shared Journey of Passion

Curtis Woodman: A Shared Journey of Passion

By Aaron G. Beebe, for GonnaHappen.com and Reno Tahoe Events

Some connections are lifelong, bound by shared passions, a love for adventure, and mutual admiration. My relationship with Curtis Woodman, a Tahoe legend, freeriding icon, and music producer, is one of those connections. Curtis’ journey through snowboarding, music, and life has inspired me, not just as the owner of GonnaHappen.com and Reno Tahoe Events but as someone who’s followed his career since day one.

Curtis’ story is one of perseverance, artistry, and staying true to his roots—a journey that resonates deeply with me and countless others from our shared hometown of Georgetown, California.

From Georgetown to the World

Curtis Woodman grew up in Georgetown, California, a small town surrounded by the Sierra Nevada mountains and then moved to Lake Tahoe. From an early age, he found his sanctuary in the legendary peaks surrounding Lake Tahoe, where his surf-inspired snowboarding style began to take shape. These mountains became his playground, and his board, his brush. Curtis’ unique approach to freeriding caught the snowboarding world’s attention early, propelling him into the spotlight alongside legends like Steve Duke, Chris Jones, Dave Hatchett who are all local legends and hero’s I follow and have met or know….

While Curtis had the skills to dominate competitions, the commercial side of snowboarding didn’t align with his spirit. In 2011, Curtis stepped away from the mainstream scene to rediscover the essence of snowboarding—freeriding. This shift wasn’t a rejection of the sport but a recommitment to the pure joy of carving fresh lines and connecting with the mountain.

A Shared History and Lifelong Admiration

Growing up, I was surrounded by friends who loved snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing, and other extreme sports. Curtis and I shared mutual friends, and I’ve had the privilege of knowing him for most of my life. We both admired the Tahoe lifestyle—a blend of adventure, artistry, and respect for nature.

Our shared love for traveling, music, and community has further deepened this connection. Curtis channels the rhythms of reggae into his craft, while I’ve always been drawn to the beats of reggaetón. These shared passions have fostered a mutual respect for the people and communities that shaped us.

Curtis’ ability to stay true to his roots while making a global impact inspires not just me but everyone in Georgetown, Tahoe, and beyond. His success is a source of pride for our communities, and I’m committed to supporting everything he does through GonnaHappen and Reno Tahoe Events.

Artistry on the Slopes and Beyond

Curtis’ freeriding projects, like New Moon (2018) and his part in Neoproto: Both were featured in Snowboarder Magazine:  Curtis has been showcasing his mastery of snowboarding. These films highlight his ability to seamlessly blend the fluidity of surfing with the exhilaration of carving through untouched powder.

But Curtis is more than a snowboarder. He’s an artist, a traveler, and a music producer. His collaboration with reggae legend Soulmedic (download here) on Spotify Untamed is a favorite here at GonnaHappen. Curtis describes his music as a reflection of his creative journey, mirroring his connection to the earth and his passion for freeriding.

His passion project, From Tahoe with Love, is a testament to his dedication. Filmed with friends in the breathtaking backcountry of Lake Tahoe, it celebrates the joy of doing what you love and staying true to yourself.

Tonight’s the night! I’m finally sharing a passion project I’ve been working on for years: “From Tahoe with Love.” This film documents a journey of split boarding and hiking through the backcountry and wilderness areas of Lake Tahoe, all captured by friends and myself. We primarily used camera gear I invested in on a credit card – a testament to the unwavering pursuit of my dream.
Many of these zones were completely uncharted territory for us. We literally flew our drone into areas, scouting out potential routes and finding incredible lines down from the peaks.
“From Tahoe with Love” is dedicated to everyone who chases their passions, makes them happen, and relentlessly pursues what they love, no matter the obstacles.

Shared Connections in Music and Extreme Sports

Curtis and I share mutual associates in the extreme sports and music industries, including those we’ve lost but continue to admire. These connections serve as a reminder of the values we hold dear—community, passion, and perseverance.

Our shared love for music and travel further bridges our paths. While Curtis finds inspiration in roots reggae, my interests extend to reggaetón, creating a rhythm that unites our worlds. Together, we celebrate the people and places that have shaped our journeys.

Supporting Curtis’ Vision

Through GonnaHappen and Reno Tahoe Events, I’m dedicated to supporting Curtis’ endeavors, whether it’s his freeriding adventures, music production, or passion projects. Curtis represents the best of Tahoe—a respect for the land, a love for the craft, and a commitment to inspiring others.

Curtis’ dedication to freeriding as the purest form of snowboarding resonates with me and our shared community. His story is a reminder that staying true to your roots and following your passion can create a ripple effect, inspiring others to do the same.

Looking Ahead

Curtis Woodman isn’t just a snowboarder or music producer; he’s a living legend. His journey through snow, music, and life is far from over. As Curtis continues to redefine freeriding and explore his artistic passions, I’m proud to stand by him as a supporter and friend.

Together, we celebrate the connections that unite us—the spirit of Tahoe locals, the artistry of snowboarding, and the universal rhythm of music.

I hope this inspires others to follow their own passions and make their dreams a reality!
