When people think about what’s feeding America, they usually picture grocery store shelves, meal kits, or their favorite trendy restaurant. But before any of that exists — before the barcodes and menus — there’s a field, a farmer, and a fight for water.

This story is personal for me. Long before GonnaHappen was ever a platform or a brand, I was on the ground — literally — in the fields of California. I didn’t grow up in ag. I grew up in hardship. I was a troubled youth trying to find purpose and stability. And somehow, farming gave me both.

👨‍🌾 My Story: From the Streets to the Fields

I got my start in produce working for Monterey Bay Packing and Mann Packing — two respected names in California’s agricultural world at the time. I wasn’t just moving boxes; I was out there inspecting produce, setting up transportation,, coordinating truckloads, and buying from the fields as an outside buyer.

But the real education? It came from the immigrant farm workers — the unsung heroes of this country.

To do the job right, I had to learn how to pick vegetables the way they did — with precision, speed, and instinct. I wasn’t above the work — I was lucky to learn from them. They didn’t just teach me how to spot a good head of lettuce or grade a melon — they taught me life skills, discipline, and pride in honest labor.

The man who first brought me into the industry gave me more than a job — he gave me a path forward. And those workers in the fields? They gave me a renewed appreciation for life. That hard work kept me focused and grounded. It kept me out of trouble. It gave me purpose.

🎉 Festa Italia Festival – Community, Culture & Local Pride

One of the highlights of my time in the agricultural community was working the Festa Italia Festival in Monterey. If you’ve never been, it’s more than just a celebration — it’s a true gathering of the Central Coast’s heart and heritage.

I had the chance to work alongside local produce owners, many of whom I knew from the packing sheds and fields. We weren’t just showcasing tomatoes and greens — we were celebrating the people behind them.

What stood out most was seeing California state senators show up — not for photo ops, but to genuinely honor the agricultural community and its roots in the region. They came to shake hands with field workers, support local farmers, and reinforce that the food economy isn’t just a business — it’s a backbone.

Seeing political leaders stand with produce families and farmworkers at a cultural event like that reminded me: change begins with recognition. And Festa Italia was one of those rare times where tradition, politics, and agriculture aligned under one roof — or in this case, one street fair tent.

🌎 They Help America — and Their Families Abroad

One thing I’ll never forget is how many of the immigrant workers I worked alongside were supporting entire families in other countries — sending money home, saving for their kids’ futures, building homes brick-by-brick across borders.

They’re not just helping California thrive — they’re helping the United States eat, and at the same time, they’re lifting entire communities overseas.

That kind of sacrifice? That kind of strength? It deserves more respect than we often give.

To better connect and understand their stories, I studied Spanish for years — and I will eventually became fluent. Speaking their language wasn’t just about the job — it was about building real trust. It deepened everything. It made me a better worker, a better manager, and honestly, a better human being.

Because when you truly listen, you learn: immigrant farm workers don’t just power our food system — they inspire a better work ethic, a deeper gratitude, and a global perspective.

💧 California Farm Water Coalition – Advocating for Agriculture

In California — a state that feeds much of the nation — water is life. The California Farm Water Coalition (CFWC) is fighting every day to ensure that farmers, packers, and processors have access to a reliable, sustainable water supply.

They’re not just talking policy — they’re preserving livelihoods. They’re keeping food on America’s tables.

And as someone who’s seen the heartbreak of a dry field or a canceled load because there wasn’t enough irrigation, I can tell you: this fight is real.

✊ United Farm Workers – Championing Labor Rights

If water keeps the crops alive, workers bring the harvest to life. The United Farm Workers (UFW) has been advocating for these laborers for decades, ensuring they receive fair pay, safe conditions, and basic dignity.

When I worked alongside these men and women, I saw their struggles firsthand — long days, intense heat, physical exhaustion. And yet they showed up every morning with grit and grace.
