Katrina Bree at The Underground Speakeasy and Distillery
The Underground Speakeasy and Distillery
Review by Aaron G. Beebe | @GonnaHappen
I’ve been wanting to check out The Underground Speakeasy and Distillery for a while—to catch some live music and try their handmade moonshine—and it absolutely delivered.
I entered the right way through the speakeasy door around back, gave the password (it changes—part of the fun), watched the metal window slide open, and stepped inside. You can figure out the rest. The moonshine? Excellent.
The Underground consistently brings in great local talent, and I came this past Sunday to see Katrina Bree with her jazz trio. I’d seen Katrina before at Jason Aldean’s Kitchen + Rooftop Bar during the Babes in Toyland charity playing her country music, and we share some mutual friends in the industry. Solid crowd good people… 😃
Food-wise, the mushrooms in a rich tomato purée were outstanding—and they convinced me to come back for the sliders. Drinks were equally memorable, including a playful Prohibition-era box reveal with a small bottle inside. I capped the night with two excellent whiskeys, each served over a single, crystal-clear ice block (sometimes you get spheres elsewhere, but this was classy and clean).
I left a bit early because I had work the next day—and then, as if on cue, ran into Katrina outside. The universe had plans. We finally got to talk, exchanged info, and wrapped the night on a perfect note before I walked home.
If you’re looking for authentic speakeasy vibes, thoughtful cocktails, good food, and real local music, The Underground is the move.
