Red Rock Canyon — A Place That Held Me Together

Out on the streets they say “Aloha,” and out in Red Rock Canyon, the spirit feels the same. Sometimes the best things in life are free—like wandering those hills, grabbing your shades, and letting the good vibes roll. 🤙🏼🌺 They call Las Vegas the 9th Island for a reason.

During the pandemic, Red Rock became my recharge station. I hiked constantly—sometimes with nothing but time, intention, and a pack. Like a lot of other groms out there, there were moments when I was living out of my vehicle, finding grounding in the open space. I helped map routes on AllTrails that are still up today, watched extreme mountain bikers send huge lines, and crossed paths with climbers building the early route databases for Mountain Project—owners included, boots on the ground.

Not every memory is easy. One day, hiking with my climber friend D. Baxter, we parked near a woman we later learned was involved in a tragic incident that made the news. It was a heavy, traumatic day. The rangers were incredible—organized, calm, and on top of everything—checking on people and keeping the park safe. Another time, I watched search-and-rescue train on horseback, using real-world scenarios with the public. You see the full spectrum of life out there.

There were lighter moments too—pulling a famous Tahoe pro climber’s van out of the sand, meeting filmmakers scouting locations, seeing commercials and movies come to life, and realizing why Red Rock is world-known for bouldering, big walls, hiking, and sightlines that stop you in your tracks. Calico holds hidden gems locals know well, and Red Rock is the gateway.

If life hands you free views, take them. Go for a hike. Breathe. Recharge. Red Rock isn’t just scenery—it’s community, resilience, and perspective. Sometimes the best things in life cost almost nothing at all. 🌄✨
